We can always try to put something together in more of a non-official capacity. Aaron was thinking about doing some sort of co-op Minecraft night in the near future.

Todd: How you feel about Minecraft is similar to how I feel about Trials. I cannot fathom the love for that game, it’s an exercise in pure frustration for me.

The best way to enjoy Minecraft is, to me, to listen to podcasts or to play with a friend. (Also, the game has become a LOT more goal/task oriented and more of a game since the update the 360 one is based on.)

But hey, I can understand how someone might not like it. It’s the same reason I can understand why people might not like Dragon Age: Origins or a Total War game). Some games simply aren’t for everyone.

One thing I think people need to separate are the idea of Systems being Mechanics. While tied together, they aren’t the same thing necessarily. Good examples of what systems are:
Lighting, sound, and graphics (sometimes these are considered systems)
Skyrim’s RadiantAI and RadiantStory.
Borderlands’ weapons generation.
Sometimes artificial intelligence is combined into specific systems (like RadiantAI).
I would assume the random level generation stuff in any roguelike, minecraft, or Diablo clone would be considered systems.

Mechanics are simply gameplay features. Cover, reload schemes, all that jazz.

The most interesting thing to me about future consoles is the ability to handle more complex systems and content streaming better. (Content streaming meaning pulling the assets from disk or dvd and loading them into the game without using a load screen to do it). Basically, the ability to create a more systems-based world even in a more linear game. Dunno, systems are what interest me the most, it’s why I love Skyrim, Minecraft, etc so much.

Mason, I tried to play more Minecraft over the weekend with my son. We got our house built and he whined at me the entire time, second guessing my building style and philosophy. I just chalked it up to pre-teen infinite knowledge of all things everywhere. We were putting the finishing touches on the roof when the sun began to set. Without any light or any way to get light. He told me to rush into the house we built because skeletons would be coming. We couldn’t see anything on the screen and could only hear noises.

I looked at him and asked, “how long do we sit here before we can play again?” He, in his infinite wisdom, informed me that we were playing and that the night cycle would only last 7 minutes. I said, “so we need to sit here for 7 minutes waiting for the sun to come up? And we will have to do that at least 2 more times before we can make torches?” He said yes but that it will get faster and more things will happen. “That might be true,” I said. “But I will have lost 21 minutes of my life waiting for a virtual, pixelated sun.”

He looked at me like I was the crazy one for having a problem with that notion and that’s where we ended our foray into Minecraft – 3 minutes after the sun came up on the first day, fighting a skeleton with a block of dirt, knowing full well I would have to do this all over again in 10 minutes.

I have a better understanding of why games are so varied and fitting for all kinds of interests and tastes. Mason, he too thinks Trials is frustrating but loves the Minecraft. We may try again this week but it will be after a couple beers.

Actually, if you are really quick, you can get a light source Day 1. You just need to be a little lucky and have Stone near you. Quickly build a furnace (9 stone?) in your house, and for fuel use a Wood (cut down tree, unprocessed) and a Wood as the “thing” it’s burning. This will make coal. Take a 3rd wood, make it into wood panels, and make the wood panels into sticks. Coal + Stick = light.

You can even use Wood panels as fuel instead of Wood, but I don’t know the math if it’s really better or not.

I don’t even do that, I just wander around for a while till I find some exposed coal, or other non-simple-stone. It’s usually somewhere around.

I would have suggested this, but wasn’t certain if that was added before or after the Adventure Update. Thinking about it now, it was probably before…

And I do believe the math works better for you using planks instead of logs, as they both give the same amount of fuel, iirc. The best thing to use is a lava bucket, or a blaze rod, but the former is bugged in Beta 1.6 / 360 Edition, and the latter doesn’t yet exist in 360 Edition at all.

But yeah, getting light sources isn’t too difficult, it can usually be done within 10 or so minutes of creating a new world.

Punch tree > make workbench > make wood pickaxe > find stone > make stone pickaxe > throw shitty wood pickaxe away > get cobblestone for furnace > put logs in furnace, using planks as fuel > you now have charcoal > stick + charcoal is the same as stick + coal > you now have light source > yaaaay
