While there’s a vast knowledge base catered towards advanced players, trying to absorb that before understanding the basics can actually be detrimental to your growth. With that in mind, here are a few nuggets of beginner-friendly advice that could help keep you off the canvas. I’ve played SOO many tournaments where people complained about throwing (With a Soul Calibur 2 tournament standing out as the worst), and I just didn’t get it. Throws are vital to any fighting game, like you said, and mastering throws can be a huge step towards repetitive success. Really great tips here, Jett! I want to see more pieces like this. Maybe a Skullgirls guide. I’ve always wanted to play that… JasonQuote

Thanks Jason for the comment! Yeah, the ‘throws are cheap’ sentiment needs to die. Especially when virtually every fighting game now has a throw escape mechanic. When I used to play as Akuma in Street Fighter IV, I constantly get hate messages from bitter losers claiming that Akuma is banned in competitive play. However, this was only ever true almost 20 years ago in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Even then, if we’re not fighting in a tournament, then those rules don’t apply. In this era where quality information on fighting games is so abundant, it’s disheartening to see how much crap information is still being spread. Here’s to hoping that this could steer someone in the right path. While my chops in other fighting games aren’t as strong, I think I’d have it in me to do one for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Street Fighter X Tekken once version 2013 drops. As for Skullgirls, I did win a tournament match at Toryuken, but I’m pretty bad at it. Unless I commit a lot more time into it, my Skullgirls guide would not be up to snuff. Jett LandichoQuote

Honestly I’d love to see either/both of those guides! I was a huge fan of MvC2, but no where NEAR tournament ready. I just enjoyed the game. So naturally I jumped all over MvC3 (though I haven’t played Ultimate…). After toying with the game for a month or so it got put on the backburner. Perhaps I just need to give it more time. Street Fighter X Tekken on the otherhand… super excited for it, then barely played it. I just didn’t get it. I think I’m spoiled with Street Fighter IV. That game is just so good on so many ways that I hold that as the standard for what other fighting games should be. Especially Capcom games! But I digress. Great write-up, once again! JsickQuote

Tick throws are awesome! They break the mix-up game wide open. If your opponent doesn’t know how to deal with them, you can just throw them to death. If they do, then it opens up a crazy Rock Paper Scissors scenario with every in-close encounter. Even when you factor in crouch teching, there’s ways to blow that up too. Jett LandichoQuote

Throws are an essential tactic. Since I play Chun Li, getting familiar with her jumping throw was a huge tool to shut down an opponents air game. I will say though, since I am always a big Mortal Kombat fan at heart, the throw mechanics in the old MK games were terribly cheap. Skullgirls is brutal. I played a beta at PAX East back in the day which was cool, then snagged it on XBLA, but I couldn’t get into it based on the extreme level of difficulty. I also traded in BlazBlue the other day because I finally realized I just didn’t have the time to put into it to become any good. Ben DanielsQuote

Yeah, the art in that game was rad but my hands literally weren’t fast enough to play that game. I couldn’t even get off basic combos in the tutorial. For something that was on a lot of “Most Promising” lists, that seems to have made zero splash in the market. David HughesQuote

My favorite Street Fighter moment will forever be beating down (O.K. I barely won) Ben in a ghetto tournament for the first time ever playing it… with Dan. Art DeetuQuote

I can’t remember for the life of me, but they played NephX in the finals against his Ken. I remember it was down to the wire on the 3rd round too. I am itching to go play (and lose) in a tournament now. Ben DanielsQuote
