This week we’re back at full power talking about Dead Space 3, the new Sly Cooper, Deepfall Dungeon, and The Plan. We also speculate about the demise of the used game market, and regale you with tales of vomiting on the high seas.

Great show, dare i say it ? – Now the best show on splitkick ;-)

I buy used game sometimes, its just fun to buy something, you may not have tried, if you had to buy it new !

But then again, like you said, after a while new games, do drop to the price of used games, and become a bargain ;-)

Thanks Peter! :-P

What is most discouraging to me, (and enraging when I’m podcasting) is the idea that you’d no longer be able to borrow games from friends and share them, or possibly even rent them via physical media sources like Red Box or video stores.

I think it would actually be detrimental to the market, because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve borrowed a game from a friend, played it for a day, and then gone out and bought it myself because I really enjoyed it. Maybe I’m the minority in this situation?

Not at all. I’m the lender. On Steam, this scenario gets served by “4-packs” at 10-20% off at launch, or Steam Deals where the game is 75% off. I gifted cheap copies of Walking Dead and Spec Ops to a couple friends where lending discs is not an option on Steam.

In my mind, this idea won’t work because Microsoft won’t discount things at competitive price points. I’m not going to gift my friend Walking Dead Season 1 a year from now unless it’s dirt cheap (the price of treating them to a few slices of a pizza).

In essence, you are totally right. If both the next Xbox and PS4 go this route, it would be very difficult to lend games, trade in to get more games, etc. The overall consumption rate for a lot of people will go down. I’d imagine people who are not always obtaining new games to play will likely play fewer games; the demand to beat quickly to get a higher price back won’t exist. As such, gaming will become more of a pastime than habitual.

Conversely, Steam does exactly this nightmare scenario and succeeds. However, Steam has picked up,…steam, because they’ve priced things cheaply enough that people can impulse purchase games like The Witcher 2 for $10. I hated Steam when HL2 launched and considered it a worthless piece of shit, much like I consider Origin nowadays. The friends list didn’t work, and it sucked down system resources like a two-story beer bong. But it’s gotten better.

I have a very difficult time imagining a Windows Games on Demand system that does this. Even with Sony’s recent push with Playstation Plus, they don’t discount a wide enough array of games to match this. And if neither console can come close to matching what already exists, how can the beat it?

I’d love to see Microsoft/Sony prove me wrong, offer an easy to use console with great social features, party chat, and a cheap/viable digital delivery system with Steam prices and reliability. As was pointed out, I very much doubt all my friends would switch to steamboxes in their living rooms, fracturing my friends list; consoles are just easier.

Ugh.

I guess we’ll see what’s going to be offered soon…

Hi Aaron, Its almost an entire different talk, when you mention the next xbox, or ps …. because i dont think many of “hardcore” gamers believing that: New system = more value for the end user, -its more likely to be: New system = more ways, to earn more money !!

All big companies want, and demand that they earn more this year, than last year, and it has nothing to do with what the value of the end user experiences

Also Im with Ben, I also like to bring my games over to a friend and we play a little, and borrowing games to a friend, is just a nice thing to do ;-)

And I don’t have to pay $50 a year to Steam to get the discounts, either. Closed platforms will ALWAYS be less competitive than the PC, because if Steam starts fucking up there’s a ton of competition waiting in the wings already.

I am *really* skeptical about next-gen consoles. They’re going to have to show a lot to get me away from my shiny, increasingly-uber PC.

I’m an eternal optimist, so I’m more “cautiously optimistic” about the next gen consoles than I am skeptical. I always want to wait and hear official announcements from the horses’ mouth before I make a judgment.

However, between the concepts some folks are rumoring about the new consoles, and the fact that I have a new gaming PC and my gaming habits seem to be coming full circle as I get older, I’m thinking the PC may win out. I’m reverting back to my teen years where I’d rather play RPG’s like Legend of Grimrock on a PC than Call of Duty or other console shooters.

We’ll see though. As it stands now, I’m still firmly entrenched in the Sony camp unless they do something to royally screw things up, which they have a pretty strong history of doing this past generation.
