Not to jump in here as if I were the fighting game expert you were referring to, though my opinion wouldn’t hold much weight here anyway because I haven’t played them.

From what I’ve heard about that series, they’re fun for what they are if you’re not looking for Street Fighter levels of depth.

but I’ve generally heard good things about them. T

There was a demo for the first Ninja Storm on PS3 awhile back before it released. If you have access to that you can try out the mechanics. It’s really pretty and pretty fun. Plays more like Zone of the Enders or the over-the-shoulder DBZ games than it does a street fighter. It’s mostly 1-on-1 fights, but lots of circle strafing, positioning and such.

Ha ha, I was thinking of you, but also just in general, Is it Ben, who also has some interests in fighting games ? or David ?

I have no interest in 2D fighting games, i find them “lacking” in depth, mostly because of limited moving in the world, the fighting is fine, but i just want my fighting games to be in a 3D world with free movement, and the street figher games, are at this point in time, just boring to me… but the mortal combat one, looks nice ;-) so maybe 2D side view is not all bad.

I like the look af the ultimate ninja storm, also they are hard to find cheap new, or used, so maybe a lot of people enjoy them ?

Thanks for your opinion ;-)

Yeah, I like the demos on the 360 too, but just never played them, also the circle strafing, and positioning seems like great fun, and is very appealing to me ;-) , it bring be back to some of the older 3d fighter games !

Peter: I have no interest in 2D fighting games, i find them “lacking” in depth, mostly because of limited moving in the world,

On the surface, moving your character left and right in a 2D fighting game sounds very limiting. However, there is a ton of depth to movement in that genre. Even most fighting game players don’t appreciate the art of movement, but there’s so much to it if you really break it down. Just some considerations off the top of my head that 2D fighting game players have to factor in with movement:

- Character walk speed
This can greatly impact your ability to either move in close or get away. Characters with fast walk speeds may be able to pull off specific combos because they can cover a certain distance between hits, though a fast walk speed can also be problematic if you can’t precisely stop on a spot that you need to be in.

- Jump arc and duration
Floaty jumps vs. short jumps can greatly impact your defensive and offensive options. In certain cases, characters can alter their jump arcs through specific moves. In Street Fighter IV, Cammy can greatly alter her jump arc through a dive kick, which can allow you to greatly confuse your opponent who will have to guess which side you’ll land on.

- Dashing
Makoto has the worst walk speed in Street Fighter IV, but also has one of the fastest and furthest dashes in the game. Makoto players must learn how to use dashing as a primary form of movement. The counter to that is that her dash has only one set travel distance. If you want to move to a spot in between her dashing ranges, you’ll have to slowly walk forward or get creative with how you move forward.

In games like the Marvel vs. Capcom series, you’ll also have to consider things like super jumping, double jumping, triple jumping, air dashing, dash canceling, wave dashing, and all of the defensive/offensive opportunities that come with those movement options.

Movement in a 2D fighting game can be hard to appreciate unless you’re really invested in learning its nuances (like I said above, even most ‘hardcore’ fighting game players don’t), but rest assured that there’s depth to it :)

First, I belive your right, there is depth to the movement in 2d fighting games, or depth in the nuances of the movement.
I’m sorry, if I sounded like I hate 2d games, they can be a lot of fun.

I guess it the same when people tell me that the sword combat in Skyrim is “simple”, when I think there is a lot of depth to it :)
back on the subject of Ultimate NS, the demo of the second one, and now the 3 one is more “lets show set pieces”, and I dont know anyone who played those games, and that’s weird :) ,but i have been reading some reviews, it does sound like a quality game.
