Rocket Jump: 055 – Nobody Likes MOBAs

28 June 2012 by Jim Hunter

This week we’re joined by once and future podcaster Adam Cogswell, who now comes to us via ggChronicle.com. He took a break from Trinity Force podcast to return to his roots, and gives us his impressions of the Smite beta. Then we shift directions and talk about Spec Ops: The Line, and the Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut DLC in the most spoiler-free way possible. Except there might be a few spoilers. All that and a few glasses of Chivas Regal on this weeks Rocket Jump!

Mass Effect 3 never grabbed me, even from the beginning. I gave up after 6 hours and traded it in. I *might* go back and play on PC because I thought the 360 version was rough-looking but the story did nothing for me.

Spec Ops looks interesting but is it interesting enough to pay full price when I have so much backlog? Still debating that….

Hey it’s Adam… the other Adam. I can talk MOBA.

In my opinion the process of dening creates a bigger skill gap to overcome. I’m not really that big of a fan of last hitting, after you get “good” at it, it’s just tedious really. I know eliminating out right wouldn’t necessarily be good but I just wish it was more linient.

… Which leads to a bigger of issue of farming in games; an old, artifical, time-extending distraction from the meat of the game.

I enjoy last hitting, because it becomes a mini-game. When you see your opponent walk toward the creep, you can harras them. That’s when the real mind games begin! So now, the opponent has to choose between grabbing 21 gold AND losing some life, or losing gold and keeping the life.

What’s nice about Smite is you’re not punished for missing CS, you just have more to gain if you do it.

I think that’s dependent upon the type of game being made.

I know, absolutely. RPGs are popular for this but come RPGs do it to an absurd extent in that there’s points there’s nothing but grinding just to get big enough numbers for a certain boss/challenge. Disgaea kinda gets away with this because it’s upfront about and it’s a parody and it takes abnegation to a whole new level…. etc, etc.

Sure, sure. That’s great if you’re a carry against another carry (w/ support on bot) but what about the top. Mostly what happens on top(and this might not be the meta anymore) is that the two champs just don’t bother since any harassment they do isn’t enough to make a difference because they’re both so beefy. I guess it still is up to the champ composition and to LOL’s credit it does feel more fast paced than say DotA 2 does
