The Recurring Bosscast: 008 – Hawk and Awe

4 February 2013 by Jett Landicho

Mat returns from a press-only Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance event and shares his stories of slicing, dicing, and dying repeatedly. Jason and Jett talk way too much about who they think are top-tier Skylanders. The Bosscast also open up their hearts to talk about the role of emotional response in video games. Beyond that, tune in for chatter about Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Street Fighter X Tekken Version 2013, Sleeping Dogs, Balloon Fight, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Sneak King!

Just came back from a trip to buy Fire Emblem: Awakening on my lunch break, only to realize it’s sold out EVERYWHERE. All the major retailers around here are sold out, and Amazon.ca has one copy left from a third party for $70. After making some phone calls, I was able to talk a local retailer into holding one from their online store for me to pick up after work, which I’m totally thankful for, but I never expected the demand to be this high. What’s going on?

I posted too soon. Here’s my answer:

Jason was close…as of the release of this Bosscast, the Blackhawks are still ‘technically’ undefeated (a couple of shootout losses). Way to go Jason, haha.

I thought if that yesterday!! I think I just needed to be more specific in my declaration.

And Jett, if you can’t get that copy for some reason, I’d recommend picking it up on the eShop. If you have enough space that is: I had to buy a new memory card to fit all my data together.

Ended up getting a physical copy last night. I ‘only’ had to drive 45 minutes across town to get it. Well worth the drive so far :P

It’s totally worth the drive. You won’t be disappointed at all.

I really want to get Drobot leveled up now… My kids love swapping Skylanders all over the place, so no single Skylander was particularly powerful.

I was kind of down on Giants for the general lack of good innovation, but I love the idea behind Swap Force. Can’t wait for that one now.

I’ve got 19 Skylanders right now, and I just want more and more and more and… I don’t have Gil Grunt.

So many Skylanders! Jett, when can we start a SSFIVAE training regiment?

@Jim – How did you miss Gill Grunt? Isn’t he one of the default Skylanders from the first game? I thought he was Godlike in the first game with the hose attack, but he wasn’t all that useful for me in Giants. Jason loves him to death though, probably because we followed different evolution paths.

@Ben – Will you be online Monday night? That’s probably the only night I can hop on this week with my move going on. I don’t have a PS3 headset so we’ll have to chat via Skype for now.

Jett, I never played the first game. I came in at Giants. That’s probably why…

Yeah that explains a lot. If you like Giants and want more Skylanders, the original is still worth it.

For emotion in games, I think emotion has been around for a long while, but everyone has their first moment. This is one of the earlier “not power fantasy” games I can think of:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missile_Command#Production

Final Fantasy 7, when you realize Cloud’s memories aren’t entirely trustworthy, was a big deal. (His clothes, dammit!) Though, earlier than that, was the final battle and conversation in Wing Commander 4.

Both of those are examples of writing in games, with Planescape Torment also being strongly written. Though emotion can be done with no dialog, ala Missle Command or Journey.

With Sleeping Dogs, I found one trick was to jump over anything, even if the cover wouldn’t actually provide cover. There was so much around, I was almost always in Slow-Mo, continuously, for every firefight.
